- Does anyone have the "straight skinny" on the differences between
- various models of USR Courier modems? Do any support Plug-n-Play?
-
- I recently ordered a V.Everything (internal), and when it arrived,
- I was dismayed to find that the box/manual didn't agree with the
- product-info on USR's web page:
-
- - The web page clearly states that the internal (ISA) version
- supports Plug-n-Play.... but Win95 seems to think otherwise.
- Neither the box nor the manual say anything about Plug-n-Play.
-
- - The web page specs a 5-yr warranty -- but the box says 2 years.
-
- - There were a few other minor discrepancies (but nothing that
- would be important at this time of year).
-
- OK, I must have received some "old stock" -- but no fear, it's got
- Flash-ROM! So, I called USR to get info on the latest flash-bits
- and maybe some updated Plug-n-Play documentation.... and now I'm
- thoroughly V.Confused.
-
- According to USR's tech support folks (who seemed not to have even
- heard of Plug-n-Play before I called):
-
- - "Your modem (a model 951) and the current version (model 1223)
- have "essentially identical hardware" -- the only difference
- being the new Flash-ROM bits." (which I've already installed)
-
- - "No Courier V.Everything modem has ever supported Plug-n-Play."
-
- - "We don't know where that web-page information came from....
- but it must be wrong.... we're pretty sure.... we think."
-
- - "Don't worry about the warranty; regardless of what the box
- says, you're covered for 5-years. We just changed that."
-
- Although the support folks seemed to be trying to help, I got the
- distinct impression that they weren't entirely sure of what they
- were saying -- especially the part about "essentially identical"
- hardware. So, what's the net.wisdom on this?
-
- - Does the latest Courier (model 1223) support Plug-n-Play, or
- is this indeed a mistake on the web page?
-
- - Do either/both of these models have the necessary hardware
- to support Plug-n-Play (with a future Flash-ROM revision)?
-
- - What (non-flash-upgradable) differences, if any, are there
- between the Courier model 951 and model 1223?
-
-
- V.Confused,
